Your Land Rover is not one computer. A Range Rover P38 alone carries an engine ECU, a body control module that runs most of the truck's electrics, the electronic air suspension, ABS/traction control, the SRS airbag system, the automatic transmission, climate control and the instrument pack — and they all talk to each other. This kit ships activated for the Range Rover P38 1999–2002 Bosch V8: the P38 systems unlock and the Bosch V8 engine unlock. It's powered up and checked here before it leaves Lynchburg. Plug it in and go.

The Nanocom license belongs to the tool, not to a VIN. This kit works on as many Bosch V8 P38s as you own — your truck, your buddy's truck, the one you're thinking about buying.
Unlock codes follow the truck's computers, not the badge, so a second truck often costs less than you'd expect:

On a P38 Bosch V8, I'll help you use this tool on the engine — it's the same Bosch V8 computer as the V8 Discovery II, and that's my truck. For the rest of the P38 — body control, air suspension, ABS, airbags, transmission and climate — the authority is Blackbox's own documentation, videos, forum and support team, and they're very good at it. I won't pretend to be an expert on trucks I don't own.

It depends on the engine management. 1999–2002 P38 V8s run the Bosch V8 — that's this kit. Earlier V8s run GEMS, and the 2.5 diesel has its own engine computer, each with its own kit. Blackbox's quick visual check: the Bosch V8's intake plenum has an overlapping, sausage-shaped top; the GEMS plenum is flat-topped with the engine size on it. Not sure? Only on an unlocked BCM. Factory BCMs were locked at the plant, and the Nanocom can't unlock one. Replacement BCMs come unlocked, and on those it can enter the fob code, which Blackbox support converts from the lock set's 14-digit code. On any P38 it can check whether the BCM is receiving a valid signal from your remote — the first question when a remote quits.
It tells you what's wrong and gives you the tools to prove it: logged faults, live target and actual height at each corner, valve and compressor tests, and ride height recalibration. Blackbox notes that a height sensor fault will sometimes clear with a recalibration before you replace anything. If a fault comes straight back after clearing, it hasn't been fixed.
Usually not. A locked BCM won't communicate while the engine is running, so try with the ignition on and the engine off. A BCM that has gone into its alarmed state — the message center switches to French and the date reads 1990-something — won't communicate at all until its EKA code is accepted. If it isn't, Blackbox's MSV-2 system is the fix.
