Your Land Rover is not one computer. A 1997–1998 NAS or 50th Anniversary Defender runs its V8 on GEMS engine management and carries the Lucas 10AS alarm and immobilizer — each with its own fault memory. On a North American truck, a $40 OBD-II reader from the parts store sees the emissions side of the engine. That's it.
The failures that frustrate V8 Defender owners — a rough idle, a check engine light that keeps coming back, an alarm that won't arm or won't disarm — live in systems a generic reader can't open. The Nanocom opens them. It's the diagnostic tool the Land Rover world has standardized on, built by Blackbox Solutions, a company that has done nothing but Land Rover diagnostics for two decades.
Extinct Motorsports is now the Official US Reseller for Blackbox Solutions — the full Nanocom line, stocked and shipped from Virginia. No customs clearance. No import duty. No carrier brokerage bill waiting at your door.
Which are you doing?
▸ Seeing what it does on my Defender
▸ Checking what's activated and what's in the box
This kit ships activated for the Defender 1997–1998 NAS/50th V8 (GEMS): the Defender systems unlock and the GEMS engine unlock. It's powered up and checked here before it leaves Lynchburg. Plug it in and go.
Optional: choose 'No second vehicle license needed' if this vehicle is all you need.
Everything here comes from Blackbox's own guides, linked in the manuals section below, and from Blackbox's confirmation of what the Defender systems unlock reads on these trucks. Here's where the Nanocom earns its keep on a NAS or 50th Defender:
The Nanocom license belongs to the tool, not to a VIN. This kit works on as many NAS and 50th Defenders as you own — your truck, your buddy's truck, the one you're thinking about buying.
Unlock codes follow the truck's computers, not the badge, so a second truck often costs less than you'd expect:
Pick a second truck in Add a second vehicle license and the amount shown is exactly what it adds: only the unlocks this kit doesn't already include, plus the other cable if that truck needs one. It's activated before the kit ships, and any extra cable is in the box.
More vehicles in the same order? Add each vehicle's add-on license and enter NEW as the unit ID. Buy a different Land Rover later and you add that vehicle's license — you don't buy a second Nanocom.
On a Discovery II, I'll help you use this tool — that's my truck. On a GEMS truck, Diesel, or CAN BUS vehicle, the authority is Blackbox's own documentation, videos, forum and support team, and they're very good at it. I won't pretend to be an expert on trucks I don't own.
Blackbox publishes a guide for every system the Nanocom talks to. Read exactly what it does on your truck before you order:
Every document and video, organized by vehicle: the Nanocom Documentation Library.
If it's a 1997–1998 North American or 50th Anniversary V8, yes — those run GEMS. Earlier NAS V8s run the older 14CUX engine computer, which the Nanocom doesn't cover.
The alarm, yes. Blackbox confirmed the Defender systems unlock reads the 10AS on 1997–1998 NAS and 50th trucks, though its Defender coverage list starts the alarm in 1999. It lists the ABS from 1999 on, so don't count on ABS coverage here.
It resets the alarm's settings to a country's factory defaults, and that can change things like how the doors lock. Blackbox recommends it only when fitting a new 10AS with no saved settings. Otherwise change settings one at a time, and save a backup first.
No. Blackbox includes an SD card only with the 2005-and-later CAN BUS kits. Saving the alarm's settings needs one, so add a card of your own.

Official US Reseller — Blackbox Solutions
A parts-store scanner sees your engine. The Nanocom sees the whole truck — body control, ABS/traction, airbags, transmission, instruments — and lets you do something about it. I run one on my own Discovery IIs. Now I sell the full line, stocked and shipped from Virginia.
