Discovery 2 & P38 owners know the reputation: these trucks are capable legends... until a random no-start leaves you stranded miles from help. One of the most common culprits behind those frustrating "cranks but won't fire" episodes—especially on hot days or after hard runs—is hidden heat damage to the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS).
You might not have experienced it yet, but thousands have. The factory fiberglass shield slowly degrades from exhaust manifold heat, eventually exposing the CPS to intense radiant energy that cooks its internals over time.
Our precision aluminum heat shield is the simple, proactive upgrade that eliminates this risk forever:

Extinct Motorsports Aluminum Crankshaft Position Sensor Heat Shield Cover
Permanent Radiant Heat Protection for Land Rover Discovery II (1999–2004) and P38 Bosch/Thor V8
Engineered specifically for the Land Rover Discovery 2's Bosch Thor V8 (4.0L and 4.6L), this precision-formed aluminum heat shield cover is the definitive upgrade to prevent one of the most common causes of no-start failures: Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS) degradation from exhaust manifold radiant heat.
The factory fiberglass shield—while innovative for its time—relies on a thin silver paint layer for heat reflection. Under real-world driving conditions, this paint degrades rapidly, exposing the fiberglass substrate to intense infrared radiation. The result? Material breakdown, loss of reflective properties, and eventual direct heat exposure to the CPS, leading to internal electronic failure (often presenting as hot no-starts or intermittent crank/no-run).
Our shield is CNC-bent from durable 5052-H32 aluminum alloy sheet, chosen for its excellent formability, corrosion resistance, and superior thermal properties:

Installation Overview (5–10 minutes):
This is a true "set it and forget it" solution—no periodic maintenance, no re-wrapping, no more worrying about stranded no-starts from a $150 sensor failing prematurely.
Backed by Extinct Motorsports' expertise in keeping Discovery 2' and P38's reliable on road and trail. If you've ever dealt with a heat-soaked CPS failure, this is the preventive upgrade you've been waiting for.
FAQ's
To prevent premature failure of your Discovery 2's Crankshaft Position Sensor (CkPS). The factory fiberglass shield was painted silver to help reflect heat, but over time the paint burns off and the fiberglass itself degrades from constant exposure to radiant heat from the nearby exhaust manifolds. Once deteriorated, the shield no longer protects the CkPS, allowing intense heat to damage the sensor—often resulting in intermittent or permanent no-start conditions.
It's made from durable sheet aluminum, which naturally reflects approximately 98% of the radiant heat bombarding it from the exhaust manifolds and only re-radiates about 2% toward the sensor. Unlike fiberglass and paint that break down over time, aluminum holds up indefinitely—no peeling, crumbling, or loss of protection.
Installation takes just minutes and requires only basic tools—no need to remove the CkPS or fully unbolt anything:
Slightly loosen the two bolts holding your existing factory cover. Slide the new aluminum shield over the bolt heads. Tighten the bolts back down—done.
Order the optional stainless steel hardware kit. Bolt the aluminum shield directly to the factory mounting points on the engine block.
If your factory shield is still mostly intact (not crumbled or missing large sections), you can extend its life temporarily by carefully wrapping it inside and out with heavy-duty aluminum foil, secured with high-temperature red RTV silicone around the edges. This helps reflect heat a bit longer. However, many shields are too far gone to save reliably, and foil is still just a short-term patch. Our aluminum cover provides a clean, permanent upgrade that works with or without the original shield in place.
