The Bones
The truck was a highly optioned SE with full winter package including the ultra luxurious heated windshield. It had the very nice factory carpeted floor mats with the Discovery embroidery in excellent shape. The truck had been owned for over 10 years by a local D2 enthusiast who had lovingly maintained it with the help of local shops, but decided to trade it on a fully updated Extinct restoration. The paint was in good condition except for the hood and roof, which were beginning to show the normal D2 clear coat fade, and the rear frame was beginning to show a bit of bubbling on the rear frame horn. The owner had added a heavy-duty Old Man Emu 1.5" lift kit with Nitrocharger shocks and extended stainless brake lines in addition to the extensive list of replacement parts. The truck had around 140k miles when I got it and ran well, but was beginning to show its age inside and out.
The Work
Underhood
The engine was freshened up with normal Extinct restoration practices, including a fresh set of top-end gaskets along with new starter, coils, plug wires, catalytic converters, accessory pulley bearings, completely new cooling system (including radiator, water pump, cooling fan, coolant bottle, and hose kit); oxygen sensors, crank position sensor, PS pump rebuild, new battery, and the normal Extinct mods of PCV valve and inline thermostat. For this truck, a new MAF, alternator, master cylinder, brake booster, and AC compressor were installed, and the cylinders were pinned using our proprietary technique. Full details are shown in the attached build sheet.
Driveline, Frame, Steering, Suspension, and Brakes
Due to the beginning of rear bubbling on the driver’s side rear frame horn, the entire rear quarter frame was replaced from a NC donor truck. During and after the process, the interior and exterior were extensively coated with rust preventative coatings consisting of Eastwood frame coating, followed by Fluid Film. Differential and transfer case fluids were replaced, and transfer case and transmission fluid level sight glasses along with a Tom Woods front driveshaft were installed. In addition to the Old Man Emu 1.5" lift kit with Nitrocharger shocks and extended brake lines, the previous owner had replaced brake pads and rotors and installed the ABS option B mod shuttle valve switch with seal upgrade kit. Full details are listed on the attached build sheet.
Exterior
Extinct exterior restoration for this truck started with a complete hood repaint, blending the tops of the front fenders due to the normal clear coat fading seen on these trucks. The roof was plasti-dipped in white in an homage to the Defenders destined for southern climates, and is completely removable if the new owner decides they would prefer to repaint in the original Epsom Green Metallic. The normal Extinct refreshing of bumpers, cowl, tail door bezel, and fender flares coated with bedliner was completed. Additional exterior accessories consisting of an OEM Safety Devices Roof Rack, OEM Front Brush Guard (both awaiting new owners’ choices regarding auxiliary lighting), OEM rear access ladder and step, and OEM tail light guards were installed along with Weatherguard window air deflectors.
Interior
Normal Extinct interior restoration of proprietary sunroof panel leak sealing, sunroof motor lubrication, headliner board stain-blocking coating (in case you forget and leave the sunroofs open), and custom water guttering mods, with new headliner fabric professionally installed. New shifter boots, subwoofer surrounds replaced, and all the window regulators are lubricated to prevent roller breakage.
Delivery
The truck will come with a brand new key fob from the UK with a spare key, an Ultragauge and companion IR pen thermometer, buyer's choice of Extinct Motorsports Tire Cover, and full Extinct Motorsports itemized build list documentation with full photo documentation. The truck will come on 16" wheels with placeholder tires (tires installed are for photos only) so that the buyer can install their choice of tires. All work completed is warranted for 1 year from the date of purchase.
The complete restoration on this truck took three years to complete, with numerous test drives conducted during the process. The total retail value of restoration work, parts, and accessories installed is in excess of $28,000.
